Journalist That Debunked Pizzagate Pleads Guilty to Possessing Child Porn.
A former investigative journalist for ABC News, James Gordon Meek, aged 53, from Arlington, Virginia, pleaded guilty to federal child sexual abuse material charges in Alexandria, Virginia. During a plea hearing in U.S. District Court, Meek admitted to illegally possessing and transporting images of child sexual abuse. Until his resignation last year, he covered national security issues for the network.
The investigation was initiated after the FBI received a tip from Dropbox regarding videos showing child sexual abuse in an account linked to Meek. As part of the plea agreement, Meek acknowledged using an iPhone to exchange illicit materials, including a disturbing video depicting the sexual abuse of an infant, during a chat session with two other individuals.
When the FBI searched Meek's home last year, they discovered numerous child sexual abuse images and videos dating back to at least 2014. The investigation also found evidence indicating Meek's use of Snapchat and other apps to coerce minors into sending sexually explicit images. In some of these communications, Meek allegedly presented himself as a girl. However, these specific allegations were not explicitly referenced in his plea deal.
Meek's lawyer attempted to argue that the evidence was obtained illegally and should be discarded. Nevertheless, the plea deal preserves Meek's right to pursue an appeal to have the evidence dismissed.
Barring a successful appeal on the search-and-seizure matter, Meek is scheduled for sentencing in September and could face up to 40 years in prison, although a maximum sentence is unlikely. One of the charges carries a five-year mandatory minimum.
Before his resignation, Meek had been with ABC News since 2013 as an investigative producer in the Washington bureau. He had also worked for the New York Daily News and served as a senior counterterrorism adviser and investigator for the U.S. House Committee on Homeland Security.
The circumstances surrounding Meek's abrupt resignation and the FBI search of his home led to mistaken speculation last year that he was targeted due to his work as a journalist.
Slade Sohmer Arrested for Child P0RN
Left-leaning journalist Slade Sohmer, once associated with efforts to discredit the "Pizzagate" conspiracy theory, has been charged with serious allegations involving child pornography.
Authorities in Massachusetts confirmed the arrest of Slade Sohmer, a former news editor residing in East Otis, on multiple charges related to child pornography. Sohmer, aged 44, faces four counts of possessing child pornography and has been granted bail set at $100,000. Stringent conditions have been imposed, including restricted internet access, compulsory location reporting, and a prohibition on contact with minors.
Formerly serving as the editor-in-chief of The Recount, a left-leaning news outlet, Sohmer's career also encompassed roles at various media organizations such as SiriusXM Radio, HyperVocal, Mic, and Beme (later acquired by CNN). His LinkedIn profile indicates involvement since 2010 with "Camp Power," a nonprofit focused on underprivileged children in New York City.
The parent company of The Recount informed The New York Post that Sohmer stepped down from his editorial position in October, citing organizational restructuring to emphasize their editorial and commercial strategies.
Assistant District Attorney Marianne Shelvy highlighted the severity of the case, referring to it as one of the most egregious instances of child pornography possession she had encountered.
Numerous independent media outlets previously associated Sohmer with debunking the "Pizzagate" conspiracy theory. This theory revolved around allegations of a pedophile sex trafficking ring operating from the Comet Ping Pong pizzeria in Washington, D.C. The conspiracy gained traction in 2016 during the heated presidential election when thousands of emails from Democratic operative John Podesta were released by Julian Assange’s Wikileaks. Online speculations interpreted coded language in these emails as references to child sex trafficking, using terms like "CP" or "cheese pizza" to insinuate illicit activities.
An investigation into Sohmer's activities commenced in June 2023 following a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. A subsequent search warrant executed on Oct. 17, 2023, resulted in the seizure of Sohmer’s electronic devices, revealing over a thousand explicit images and videos, with some depicting the assault of minors as young as three years old. Additionally, Sohmer is accused of producing at least one child pornography video.
Conversations retrieved from instant messaging service Telegram indicated discussions between Sohmer and an accomplice regarding luring, kidnapping, and assaulting children. These messages reportedly detailed plans for child rape and the exchange of illicit material. Sohmer's involvement on Snapchat has also been mentioned in connection with these activities.
Despite pleading not guilty to the charges, Sohmer was released on bail and is required to report his whereabouts to parole officers as he awaits trial, scheduled to commence on Dec. 21st. A conviction on all charges could lead to a mandatory sentence of 15 years.
